Middle School Electives
We teach students to be agents of their own learning. We feed the flames of student curiosity. In independent study we celebrate student interests, supplying information and structure as needed. We facilitate student response to all sorts of learning in a wide variety of formats– writing, video, audio, computer presentation slides, animation, podcasts and more.
In fifth and sixth grade there are opportunities to join a club with peers who share an interest. In seventh and eighth grades, as we prepare students for the choices high school will afford them, we introduce elective coursework.
With guidance, each semester seventh and eighth grade students select either one class that meets twice a week or two classes that each meet once a week. The dominant themes of the courses offered are art and music. Elective courses offered to date include: woodworking, two dimensional art, three dimensional art, multi-track recording, and STEAM (Science Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) explorations.
The power of choice is a wonderful tool expertly wielded by Friends School Haverford teachers!
