TORCH – Togetherness, Open-Mindedness, Respect, Community, and Honesty
Student government at Friends School Haverford is conducted in the manner of Friends. Decisions are made and representatives are chosen by consensus. Our student government group is known by the acronym TORCH, which stands for togetherness, open-mindedness, respect, community, and heart.
TORCH affords middle school student officers a leadership opportunity and is a vehicle for empowering students both to have a voice and make a difference in their school community.
Issues taken on by TORCH have included everything from raising money to support the reconstruction of lives and property in the Philippines in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, to deciding that it would be beneficial for all students to purchase materials for, and build, a Gaga court on campus. Gaga is a popular ball game.
TORCH is a wonderful manifestation of the way our middle school students — our vaunted eldest students — lead. TORCH sets a tone for thoughtful discourse, passionate service to others, and fun!
